Recently we have updated Mosaic’s site and we used for catalog nice jQuery magnify plugin.
Check this amazing magnify stuff.
When jQuery was released became possible to do amazing stuff without usign Flash.
As for me I’m not a big fan of the Flash and I do as much as possible on JavaScript with jQuery library.
Read and learn at jquery.com.
The effect is nice but the jQuery main example crashed my browser. It’s also very heavy in terms of code.
I’d stick to using Magic Zoom which was the original version of this and is under 20kb of code and doesn’t crash Firefox

Thats really strange why Firefox is crashed, we have tested on FF2,3 IE6,7 and Safari. All was fine.
Only Opera has problems.
